Tampa General Hospital has a Consumer Report rating of 43/100, with lowest or below average ratings in a number of categories, including three heart surgery related categories, avoiding MRSA infections, recommended medications, overall aortic valve replacement surgery, appropriate use of abdominal scanning, and avoiding surgical death. As a hospital ripe with so many failures and complications, it is unsurprising that it has been the subject of medical malpractice lawsuits.
In 2012, a medical malpractice lawsuit was filed against Tampa General Hospital. A former Tampa City Council member was admitted to the hospital with chest and abdominal pain, where the patient later developed a severe pressure ulcer on his lower back. The sore, which never healed, was caused by the staff’s failure to relieve pressure on the area. The next year, his widow was awarded over $700,000.
In another lawsuit against Tampa General Hospital, the parents of a premature baby who suffered a painful death were awarded $12 million. The parents alleged that the hospital did not do enough to help save their child. This is just one out of several malpractice suits filed against Tampa General, which involve the death of premature infants.
